As now media has played a very important role in our life, we all share information on internet in some ways. It seems that chatting with friends on Facebook or posting some pictures through Instagram is already a must-do in our daily life. However, not all people can live as the way we do. People with disabilities often find it is hard to get access to the information online. A lot of social networks do not include them as their targets, which means that, according to the census in 2000, approximately 20% of Americans who are either diagnosed psychological or physical disability are left out. Isn’t that surprising? Thinking that every one of five people may not be able to use online tools to get the vital information that we get, it is not only a lose to disabled people but also a lose to our society.
So in my hypertext, I will talk about the view of media from people with disabilities’s perspectives. I will also use examples to demonstrate that media is in a great need to disabled people and there are many benefits for disabled people to have media in life. In addition, I will introduce the advocacy groups of disabilities and means they use to get attentions from the public. Furthermore, I will use examples of social networks (Facebook and Myspace) and website development to illustrate the trend that we gradually incorporate media into disabilities’ lives. In the end, I will show you what we can do and why we should care. I hope that we can do a better job in spreading out words to improve public’s awareness of the disabled and help the disabled to gain a better life.
